For many English language teachers, learning objectives are either associated with two aspects of teaching: statements of intended lesson content which are written in a lesson plan for the benefit of observers when their lessons are watched or with information in a teacher’s book about the aims of a unit or a double page spread in a coursebook. Either way, this is a missed opportunity. Good learning objectives should be focused not on what the teacher does but on the anticipated learning taking place in the classroom.

This workshop will look at the importance of learner-friendly lesson objectives as they inform both the planning and delivery stages of learning and teaching. It will borrow from the field of business to relate SMART objectives to the classroom and how these can be used as a powerful tool for student motivation, progress tracking and relating what is learned to our learners’ real-world communicative needs.
